Inside Track Short Track Notebook: July 31st Edition

In the July 31st edition of Spencer Lewis' Short Track Notebook, we update you on OSCAAR Super Late Model standout Andrew Gresel, Laird International Raceway Modified pilot Justin Jones, Delaware Speedway veteran Jamie Grover and Flamboro Speedway champion Billy Schwartzenburg. We also break out the video camera and catch up with Josh Gruntz and Davey Terry, and ask all about the OSCAAR Modified Tour!

OSCAAR Super Late Model tour winner Andrew Gresel has announced via his @SaubleFalls81 Twitter account that he will make his first career Super Late Model start south of the border, when he looks to qualify for the $20,000-to win Summer Sizzler at New Paris Speedway on August 1st. Gresel will make the 680km haul from his shop in Hepworth, ON to the New Paris, IN speedplant, with hopes of becoming the first Canadian to join father-and-son combo JR & Tyler Roahrig, CRA Super Series legend Scott Hantz and Michigan standouts Jeff Ganus and John Long on the list of Summer Sizzler race winners. Gresel's experience on the tight confines of Sauble Speedway will serve him well, when he tackles New Paris' tight ¼ mile surface. The Sauble Falls Racing team will compete Thursday night, travel back to Ontario and Friday, and compete in Round 7 of the OSCAAR tour at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night. Sponsorship for Gresel's venture to New Paris will come from Sauble Falls Tent & Trailer Park, London Recreational, Canadian Union of Skilled Workers, Overland Heating & Cooling, McRobert Fuels, Spira Fire Protection, Shoreline Property Management and HY-Grade Roofing.

Sault Ste. Marie driver Justin Jones has sent along this shot of his Open Wheel Modified after a horrendous wreck last Wednesday (July 24th) at Laird International Raceway. The car made heavy contact with the backstretch retaining wall, effectively destroying its entire front end. Videographer Tom Stephenson has posted footage of the wreck to his Youtube account, the video can be found here.

Delaware Speedway Super Stock veteran Jamie Grover has confirmed that he will be in attendance at Sunset Speedway this Sunday (August 4th), for the Innisfil, ON 1/3 mile's 50-lap invitational event. The Glencoe, ON driver will make his first career Sunset Int'l Speedway start, alongside Sunset veterans Randy 'The Rocket' Rusnell, Lane Zardo and Paul Maltese. Marketing support for Grover's 2013 season includes Bob Pearce Trucking, London Drive Systems and Ultimate Custom Fiberglass.

OSCAAR Modified Tour fan favourite Josh Gruntz will make his first start of the 2013 season this Saturday (August 3rd) at Peterborough Speedway. The former Kawartha Speedway Thunder Car regular has made a number of changes to his McColl Racing Enterprises-built chassis over the off-season, in preparation to compete alongside point leader Brent McLean, defending champion Gary McLean and the rest of the uber-talented tour roster. We caught up with Josh recently and asked him about his plans for the rest of the season, his opinion on the ever-changing tour landscape and what drivers have surprised him through the first half of 2013. The insightful 1 on 1 can be found on our Youtube channel or by following this link.

Multi-time Mini Stock feature winner Billy Schwartzenburg has announced via his team's @SpiraRacing86 Twitter account that he will be in action tonight (July 31st) at Sauble Speedway's Dash for Cash event. The Guelph, ON driver won at Sauble earlier this season, and will return to battle local front runners Kevin Bridge and Kevin Paupst in the extended-distance event. Gate times and ticket prices can be found at www.SaubleSpeedway.ca

Here's a look at what's left of 11-year old Jake Watson's front end, after a rough and tumble Sunday affair at Flamboro Speedway. The Mini Stock feature, won by multi-time champion Dave Bailey, included a number of incidents that slowed its pace. Youtube user PetalPower51 has uploaded footage of the event that shows just how rough it was for some drivers. Check it out here.

We caught up with Davey Terry (above, by Thompson Photography) post-race at Sunset Speedway last Sunday (July 28th) and asked his thoughts on the OSCAAR Modified Tour's 2013 season, how unique his Troyer by Hanley chassis is, how strong he feels is program is heading into the business-end of 2013 and his predictions for the upcoming tour event at Peterborough Speedway on August 3rd. Fellows to Drive For JR Motorsports at Mid-Ohio

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 1, 2013) – Ron Fellows, the accomplished sports car and road racer, will drive for JR Motorsports in the Aug. 17 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.  General manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller made the announcement today.

Fellows will drive the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro SS and carry primary branding from AER Manufacturing, a world leader in engine remanufacturing for the past 60 years.  AER has sponsored Fellows in previous NASCAR ventures – including last year at Road America – and has backed Fellows in the Trans Am Series and American Le Mans Series since 1990.

"We're thrilled to have Ron back in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet for the sixth consecutive year," said Earnhardt Miller.  "Ron is a fierce competitor to watch and a tremendous talent who isn't satisfied with anything less than victory.  As always, he'll bring a wealth of experience and knowhow to our road course program at Mid-Ohio."

A former winner for JRM, Fellows was victorious in the No. 5 Chevrolet on Aug. 2, 2008, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.  He holds four career Nationwide Series wins, earning three at Watkins Glen International.  Along with those victories, Fellows has 12 top-fives, 15 top-10s and two poles in only 24 career starts.

"I'm extremely grateful to Dale Jr., Kelley and my friends at AER Manufacturing for helping put this program together," Fellows said. "As a racer, anytime you can get in the type of equipment that JRM offers, you expect good things.  If our past success is any indication, I think we have a great chance of ending up in victory lane at Mid-Ohio.  With the series heading there for the first time, it will be an exciting race for sure."

Fellows, a native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, scored top-five finishes in each of his three starts for JRM.  His tally includes top-10 finishes in nine of 12 career races with JRM.

A longtime sports car and road-racing veteran, Fellows is credited with three class championships in the American Le Mans Series, two class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and 19 overall victories in the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am Series as a member of the Corvette Racing Team. His NASCAR credentials include six overall wins (two in the Camping World Truck Series), and two runner-up finishes in Sprint Cup competition.

NASCAR Wilson Equipment 300 to Support Red Cross Disaster Relief

JAMES RIVER, NS (August 2, 2013) -  The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race at Riverside International Speedway on August 17 has been rebranded the Wilson Equipment 300 Supporting Red Cross Disaster Relief. The move comes as the new president of Wilson Equipment, Jim Wilson, looks to expand the event to create visibility and assistance  for the emergency preparedness division of Canadian Red Cross Disaster Relief Services.

"Wilson Equipment and our employees are delighted to be supporting Red Cross, a leader in disaster relief in our province and around the world." said Jim Wilson, President of Wilson Equipment. "It is a natural fit for us. Whether it is a flood or a fire, or any other natural or man-made large-scale incident the Canadian Red Cross responds immediately - and more often than not, heavy equipment is an integral part of the immediate response and clean-up."

A new event logo has been created integrating the new Wilson Equipment brand with the Red Cross Disaster Relief mark. The logo and rebranded event name will appear in event advertising and promotions over the next three weeks helping to raise awareness for the charitable service; on race day spectators will have the opportunity to visit with  Canadian Red Cross representatives to learn more about their services, as well as how they can help.

The disaster relief services provided by the Canadian Red Cross offer a layer of support for people during times of hardship and help give them the resources that they need to overcome challenges. With help from Canadians, the Canadian Red Cross is able to respond to emergencies and disasters wherever they strike and give assistance to those who need it most. To show your support for the Canadian Red Cross, and to make a difference in someone's life today, visit online at www.redcross.ca or in-person at your local Canadian Red Cross office. Each contribution can benefit people in the aftermath of crises and give them the ability to better prepare for future emergencies.

Riverside International Speedway general manager Paul McLean is delighted with the new affiliation.

"We are proud to be part of bringing awareness to something as important as the Red Cross," said McLean. "It is great to have event sponsors that are as passionate about their communities as they are in their business. "

The Wilson Equipment 300 Supporting Red Cross Disaster Relief sees the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series makes its one and only annual visit east of Quebec to Riverside International Speedway. The August 17 date is a new slot on the series calendar for Riverside, with the six prior editions of the event (2007 to 2012) held in September. The earlier date should provide event more excitement for race fans with increased car count and easier access during summer vacation.

Besides the popular NASCAR Canadian Tire Series the one-day show will include the Highland Home Building Centre 50 for the Napa Sportsman Series. Both divisions will see qualifying determine starting lineups for the features. The NASCAR racers will see time trials and the sportsman racers will run heat races to kick things off for the day, starting at 2:30 p.m.

NASCAR qualifying goes green at 4 p.m. followed by the Highland Home Building Centres 50 at 5 p.m. A NASCAR autograph session is set for 6:30 p.m. followed by opening ceremonies and the Wilson Equipment 300 Supporting Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Discounted advance tickets are available until August 16 at www.riversidespeedway.ca. Race day tickets can be purchased at the track box office starting at Noon August 17.

Guenette to Race NASCAR Truck in Chevrolet Silverado 250

Montreal, QC/ August 4, 2013- The Motos Illimitées/DLGL team is proud to announce that driver Alex Guenette will race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS), at the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado 250 on September 1 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

This will be Alex's first race in what is effectively the third rung in the NASCAR racing hierarchy, behind the leading Sprint Cup Series and the second rung Nationwide Series. This race will also mark the first race run by the NCWTS race trucks in Canada and their first race on a road course in 13 years.

According to team leader Jacques Guénette, "We have established a graduated path to allow Alex to learn his craft in progressively more powerful cars and competitive series. It is also logical to take advantage of races in an environment where he can apply his knowledge directly. A road race, in a good car with 150 more horsepower than what he is used to is the right choice, especially as he knows the track very well."

The team will practice in Sebring (FL), where several Indy Car and American Le Mans Series car also test. The track is close to the shop where transplanted Quebecer Mario Gosselin will prepare Alex's race truck, as well as the one that will be driven by NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCaTS) regular Martin Roy at the same event.

Alex is anticipating a long, hard weekend of work, as he will race in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race, held on the same day as the Truck race.

"I know the track well and I am sure that Dave Jacombs will give me a great car for Canadian Tire race, so no problem there. The track is quick and not physically hard to drive in the Canadian Tire Car, at least nowhere as hard as on a short oval or a tight road course."

Alex added, "The truck race is a different matter, as they are significantly more powerful, and it will be our first time out in a race with the truck against a new set of drivers, so that will be more difficult.  We are covering all the bases in our preparation so I expect that we will do well in both events."

The No 29 Motos Illimitées/DLGL Dodge will race in the JuliaWine100.com NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race at next weekend's Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Practice (10:50am) and qualifying (5pm) will take place on Saturday August 10, and the race will start at 3:30pm on Sunday August 11.

Inside Track Short Track Notebook: August 9th Edition

In the August 8th edition of Spencer Lewis' Short Track Notebook, we update you on 2-time OSCAAR winner Dwayne Baker, OSCAAR Mod fan favourite Josh Gruntz, third-generation star Cayden Lapcevich, Karting graduate Jordan Latimer, Ltd. Late Model rookie Shawn Arnott and former Hurricane Midget champion Ryan Fraser.

After compiling back-to-back wins in OSCAAR Super Late Model competition at Sunset Speedway, provincial heavyweight Dwayne Baker has confirmed he will return to the tour this Sunday (August 11th) at Kawartha Speedway. 'The Bully' will be behind the wheel of his 2013 Port City Racing chassis for the first time at Kawartha, and will enter the event with hopes of securing his first career OSCAAR triumph away from Sunset's 1/3 mile confines. Baker will join point leader Brandon Watson, rookie sensations Kevin Cornelius and Andrew Gresel, 4-time tour champion Glenn Watson and perennial contender Derrick Tiemersma in the 50-lap contest. Gate times and ticket prices for the event can be found at www.OSCAAR.ca

Here's a look at what was left of Josh Gruntz' OSCAAR Modified after a mid-race incident at Peterborough Speedway on August 3rd. We caught up with Josh the following night, and asked about the wreck, what's left of his McColl Racing Enterprises-built chassis, his plans for the rest of the season and where he could find himself in 2013. The interview can be found on our YouTube page, or by following this link, and be sure to follow the ever-entertaining Gruntz on Twitter @Gruntz31

Third-generation competitor Jordan Latimer will make his first career Thunder Car start this Saturday at Barrie Speedway. Latimer, the grandson of multi-time Barrie titlist Garry Reynolds, will bring with him an elite level Karting pedigree, as he begins the transition to full-bodied stock car competition. The Coldwater, ON driver will campaign the chassis that veteran Leonard Johnston ran in 2012, and plans on appearing in a total of 4 events this season in order to retain his rookie status for a full schedule in 2014. Sponsorship for Latimer's debut will come from T&C Construction and Welding Ltd., A/C Electric, Creechers Design, Tax Smart, Get Jack – Jack Latimer Sales Rep. Re/Max Orillia and K&K Racing Karts North America.

Former Flamboro Speedway Thunder Car regular Shawn Arnott will return to the speedway this Saturday, making his first career Flamboro Late Model start in Round 3 of the prestigious Grisdale Triple Crown Tournament. The former Oktoberfest champion purchased a chassis from Peterborough-area front runner Todd Delisle over the off-season, and has been competing weekly in the Ltd. Late Model division at Varney Motor Speedway. Arnott's return will pit the rookie against former teammate Shawn Chenoweth, who is enjoying a banner year at Flamboro, and will enter the final round of the Grisdale Tournament a mere 3-markers away from the lead in the overall standings.

Lucas Oil TQ Can-Am Midget rookie Ryan Fraser (above, by Paul Husby) has posted some fantastic on-board footage from the series' visit to Sauble Speedway this weekend. The 2012 Hurricane Midgets champion was impressive in his 2 weekend appearances, managing an 11th place finish on Saturday, before improving to a 8th place result on Sunday. Footage of Fraser battling his way through traffic can be found here.

We caught up with third-generation driver Cayden Lapcevich (above, by Lisa Davidson) at Sunset Speedway on Sunday night, and asked all about his tumultuous, up and down weekend. 'The Prodigy' was involved in a late-race skirmish on Saturday night that absolutely destroyed his family-owned Super Stock, potentially ending his 2013 season. One night later, he hopped into Anthony Simone's Ltd. Late Model for his first career division start. We ask Cayden about the rest of the season, his experiences over the weekend, what he's learned so far and where he sees himself spending the rest of his summer. NCATS: Tagliani speeds to GP3R qualifying record

TROIS-RIVIERES, QC – Alex Tagliani claimed the pole position for the JuliaWine.com 100 in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 qualifying on Saturday at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres.

Tagliani – a native of Lachenaie, Que. – got around the 1.53-mile street circuit in 67.080 seconds for an average speed of 82.111 mph. The time bettered the previous track record of 67.661 seconds (81.406 mph) set by Andrew Ranger in 2009 by over a half-second. It was the second pole win at the famed track for the IZOD IndyCar Series regular, having last earned the honor in 2009, and the fourth of his Canadian Tire Series career that will cover 16 starts. His last pole win in the series came in June 2011 at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Que.

Local Trois-Rivieres product Louis-Philippe Dumoulin – second in the series standings – was second fastest at 67.355 seconds (81.776 mph). He started from the pole at GP3R last season before finishing second to Ranger in the race.

Marc-Antoine Camirand earned the start in the Canadian Tire Series race by winning a Quebec Sportsman race on Friday night. The sports car-racing veteran with 20 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series starts to his credit recorded the third-best time in qualifying at 67.376 seconds (81.750 mph). Camirand will make his first series start in Sunday's JuliaWine.com 100.

Former Formula One and IndyCar Series champion Jacques Villeneuve qualified fourth at 67.467 seconds (81.640 mph) followed by J.R. Fitzpatrick in fifth with a time of 67.576 seconds (81.508 mph).

Alex Labbe, Martin Roy, defending series champion D.J. Kennington, Kerry Micks and Alex Guenette rounded out the top 10.

Points leader Scott Steckly, who has won each of the last three series events, qualified 14th.

Each of the top-six qualifiers eclipsed Ranger's track record as cooler than normal weather kept the track temperature down.

The JuliaWine.com 100 is set to get underway on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Surprisingly, Price has announced via his Facebook page that the damage was not as severe as originally feared, and after an extensive amount of work through the week, he expects to return to competition this weekend. In addition, Price will donate the damaged door of his car to a silent auction to benefit breast cancer research, organized by his brother and fellow racer Donovan Price, this Saturday at Peterborough Speedway.

Cornelius recently suffered a workplace-related injury, heavily damaging his right hand. The injury will remove Cornelius from contention for OSCAAR's 2013 Rookie of the Year title, and puts the Orangeville, ON driver out of action at a time when his streak of consistent finishes had many industry personalities pointing to him as the surprise of the 2013 OSCAAR season. Updates on Cornelius' recovery can be found on his team site www.KDRMotorsports.ca. Kevin's 2013 campaign is made possible thanks to Halton Crushed Stone, Lee Sand and Gravel, Hanson Concrete, Sandbox Tech Child Care, Alliston Transmission, Ed's Automotive, Triple Concrete and MacMaster Buick GMC for their support. Victory at Petty Raceway is Shawn Tucker's third MPST win of 2013

HALIFAX, NS - Shawn Tucker of Fredericton, NB drove to victory in Round Ten of the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour on Saturday evening at Petty International Raceway. Tucker took the lead on Lap 77 from defending Parts for Trucks 150 champion Shawn Turple (Enfield, NS) and would not relinquish the lead over the second half of the event after Turple led the most laps of the race from the outside of the front row.

Tucker's #52 Rockico Equipment Limited Chevrolet crossed the line first over Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell, PE) and Exide Batteries Rookie Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro, NS), who scored his first career podium on the Tour. Completing the top five in the Parts for Trucks 150 were Prince Edward Island's Darren MacKinnon (Charlottetown) and Dylan Gosbee (Cornwall).

The day began with MacKinnon taking fast time in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials with a 13.758 second lap. After a shakeup for the top six drivers and the King Freight Lines ten lap Dash for Cash, it was Gosbee who would start the Parts for Trucks 150 in the top spot.

Dartmouth Dodge Heat Races went to Blenkhorn and Kent Vincent (Crapaud, PE). Blenkhorn's third place finishing spot earned him the Exide Batteries Rookie of the Race award. Enfield's Shawn Turple took the lead from the start and held it until just after the halfway point to earn him the Linde Most Laps Led Award. Cole Butcher rocketed his car ahead the most positions to sixth spot earning him the Absolute Traffic Hard Charger Award.

The Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour is off next weekend, but will return on Saturday, September 7 at a new race time of 4:30pm at Riverside Speedway. Tickets are now on sale at www.riversidespeedway.ca.
